In most of the city you can walk alone at night in Barcelona worry free. Still, if you are a woman, and have been drinking, take an Uber or walk with your friends. Stay on the main streets which are always well lit, and avoid dark alleys, or anyplace that looks ‘seedy’. Hold your purse firmly, if using your phone be very aware of your surrounding, many a phone have been snatched out of unsuspecting hands. Pickpockets work 24/7, but the chances of being mugged or worse are almost nil.
Where to be extra careful in Barcelona
Want to be on the safe side? Then consider avoiding certain areas:
1. El Raval
I like El Raval, and visit it frequently, and it is fine during the day, but late at night it gets a little seedy. It is arguably the dodgiest place to be, late at night in Barcelona. There is a homeless shelter and a needle exchange facility in the heart, and as such you have a lot of homeless, drunks, and drug users that congregate near the shelters. If you are new to the city, I would just suggest you are extra careful late at night. Pro Tip – carry a whistle with you. If you ever have trouble – Make Noise. There is a good chance there is an undercover policeman nearby.
2. Sant Adrià de Besòs
Really, there is no reason to go here. Nothing to see. Just avoid it – day or night.
3. Las Ramblas
*With caution. Las Ramblas If you don’t care about people trying to sell you drugs or sex, you will be ok. It is not dangerous, but late at night, that’s what most people go there for. Also, it’s Las Ramblas. Local’s almost never go there. It is a tourist trap, full of undesirable characters. Pro Tip – Never eat on Las Ramblas
4. The Gothic Quarter
Pre-pandemic this place was looking up. Post-pandemic, it’s is slipping back to the wild side. Be careful at night, and stay on the well lit streets, and you will be ok.
