After waiting 100 Years - we are almost there:
It took longer to build than the Pyramids!
Finally: Sagrada Familia Announces 2026 Completion Date
The La Sagrada Familia Foundation has declared that the iconic church in Barcelona will be completed in 2026. Exactly 100 years after the death of its visionary architect, Antoni Gaudí. This announcement is a major milestone in the long and intricate history of one of the world’s most famous buildings.
Construction History
Construction of the Sagrada Familia started in 1882. Originally designed by Francisco de Paula del Villar, the project dramatically transformed under Antoni Gaudí when he took over in 1883. Gaudí devoted the last 40 years of his life to this project, embedding it with his unique vision until his death in 1926. At that time, less than a quarter of the church was finished.
Modern Developments and Final Completion
Recently, the pace of construction has significantly accelerated. Engineering firm Arup has played a crucial role, using innovative techniques to speed up the work. Arup engineer Tristram Carfrae explained that prefabricated stone panels are being used to build the remaining towers, drastically reducing the weight and speeding up the project.
The foundation has announced that the Chapel of the Assumption is expected to be completed in 2025, and the towering structure of Jesus Christ will be finished by 2026. This will complete all 18 spires, fulfilling Gaudí’s grand design. The central spire, which will rise to 170 meters, will make the Sagrada Familia the tallest church in the world, surpassing Ulm Minster in Germany by nearly 10 meters.
Overcoming Historical Challenges
The construction of Sagrada Familia has encountered numerous challenges over its 140-year history. After Gaudí’s death, work slowed due to funding issues and was further halted by the Spanish Civil War, during which many of Gaudí’s original plans were destroyed. The current design is based on reconstructed plans and models, staying as true as possible to Gaudí’s vision.
Gaudí’s Legacy
Sagrada Familia is the largest and most significant of the many buildings designed by Gaudí in Barcelona. His distinctive style has left an indelible mark on the city, with several of his other works, including Casa Batlló and Park Güell, attracting millions of visitors each year. The completion of Sagrada Familia will not only fulfill Gaudí’s lifelong dream but also cement his legacy as one of the most innovative and influential architects in history.
Anticipation for the Future
As the final stages of construction progress, anticipation builds among locals and visitors alike. The completion of Sagrada Familia will be a momentous occasion, symbolizing the culmination of over a century of architectural innovation and dedication. When finished, the church will stand as a testament to Gaudí’s genius and the collaborative effort of countless individuals who have contributed to its creation over the years.
