How to get a
NIE number in Spain.
The NIE is your personal foreigner identification number. This guide explains the application routes, documents and timing to consider when preparing to buy in Barcelona.
02 · Know the terminology
NIE, NIF, TIE or NUSS?
| Term | What it means |

| NIE | Your foreigner identification number. The personal number assigned to you for dealings with Spanish authorities. |
| NIF | Your tax identifier. For a foreign individual, the NIE normally serves as the NIF. A separate company has its own NIF. |
| TIE | A physical foreigner identity card. It records the holder’s authorised status in Spain and displays their NIE. Not everyone with a NIE needs or qualifies for a TIE. |
| NUSS | Your Social Security number. A separate identifier for dealings with Spanish Social Security, including employment and contributions. |
The key distinction: a NIE identifies you. It does not, by itself, give you permission to live or work in Spain.
03 · Choose your route
Where will you apply?
In Spain
Apply personally through the appropriate immigration office or police station. Check the local procedure and appointment requirements before attending.
From abroad
Apply through the Spanish consulate responsible for where you live. Follow that consulate’s own document, appointment and payment instructions.
Through a representative
An authorised representative can submit the request in Spain. Their power must expressly authorise the NIE application.
Using a lawyer is a way to delegate the application. It still goes through the relevant authority.

Get the documents together.
For a standalone NIE request, use this as a starting checklist. Confirm the exact requirements with your office, consulate or representative.
- Completed and signed EX-15. Check that your personal details match your identification. Find EX-15 in the official form library .
- Valid identification and copies. Bring your original passport or accepted identity document, with the copies required for your application.
- Your reason for requesting a NIE. Explain the economic, professional or social reason and include any supporting evidence the office requires.
- Applicable fee and payment evidence. For applications in Spain, check the Modelo 790, código 012 instructions. Consular applicants should follow their consulate’s payment procedure.
- Appointment confirmation, where required. Check the applicant’s details, office, date and selected procedure.
- Authority for your representative, if applicable. The power must expressly cover the NIE request. Confirm any translation or legalisation requirements.
05 · Common questions
The short answers.
Does my NIE number expire?
The number stays with you. A certificate or card displaying it may have separate validity or renewal requirements, so distinguish the number from the document.
How long will it take?
Allow for both securing an appointment and processing the application. Ask your office, consulate or representative about current timings before planning travel or agreeing a property deadline.
Can I start looking for property without it?
Yes—you can research areas and view homes while arranging your NIE. Before signing a reservation or purchase agreement, ask your lawyer to check how your documentation and financing fit the proposed deadlines.
Does a NIE give me residency or permission to work?
No. It is an identification number. Your right to live or work in Spain depends on your nationality, status and the relevant immigration procedure.
Can someone apply on my behalf?
Yes, through a properly authorised representative. Their power must expressly cover the NIE application. Confirm the required documents and formalities before arranging the authorisation.
What if I already have a NIE?
Use your existing number rather than requesting another. If you have lost the document or your details have changed, ask the relevant authority which certificate or update you need.
For individual immigration or legal questions, confirm the appropriate procedure with the authority or your lawyer.
