Why Upgrade Camp Nou?
Camp Nou, inaugurated on September 24, 1957, initially featured two levels of stands. It was expanded before the 1982 Spanish World Cup with a third tier, and the lower ring was rebuilt between 1993 and 1994, which included lowering the pitch and removing standing areas. Despite minor renovations, the stadium has largely retained this form. As the largest stadium in Europe and home to globally renowned FC Barcelona, the need for further expansion became evident in the early 21st century.
Main Features of the Camp Nou Expansion
- New Third Tier: Constructing a new third tier with a uniform height, increasing capacity to over 105,000.
- VIP Ring: Creating a VIP ring between the second and third tiers.
- Roofing: Roofing all spectator seats.
- Panoramic Screen: Adding a panoramic screen under the canopy.
- Open Feel: Enhancing the venue’s open feel with wide terraces.
Costs and Budget
An internal referendum in late 2021 approved a budget of €1.5 billion for the Espai Barça project, with €900 million allocated for Camp Nou. The redevelopment is set for completion between 2022 and 2025.
Initial Works and Sponsorship
Preparatory work began in July 2022, coinciding with a sponsorship agreement that renamed the venue to Spotify Camp Nou. Demolition of the south stand started on September 1, 2022, involving the removal of seats and reinforced concrete elements. This phase was completed by the end of 2022 at a cost of €4.6 million.
Main Construction Phase
The main construction work commenced after the 2022/23 season. Turkish company Limak Construction was announced as the main contractor in early 2023. During the 2023/24 season, FC Barcelona will temporarily relocate to Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, which has a capacity of less than 56,000. This move will necessitate many season ticket holders to cancel their tickets.
FC Barcelona aims to return to Camp Nou in the 2024/25 season, though the stadium’s capacity will initially be limited. The full completion of the expansion is scheduled for 2026.
By understanding the details and timeline of the Spotify Camp Nou expansion, fans and stakeholders can anticipate the enhanced experience that awaits upon its completion.
