Because in Spain, it is totally OK to start drinking at noon. Especially, if it is the weekend. Personally I like to start my vermut and tapas crawl about 2:00 and make my way through whatever neighbor we have chosen, getting a vermut and a tapa, and popping off to the next place.

Differences Between Black and White Vermouth

Black Vermouth:

  • Black Vermouth

    Color and Flavor
Black vermouth, also known as red or sweet vermouth, boasts a deep, rich color that varies from dark amber to dark red. The flavor profile stands out with sweet, spicy, and herbal notes, offering a complex, full-bodied taste.

    Base Wine
Crafted from red or white wine, black vermouth achieves its characteristic color through the addition of caramel.

    Usage
In classic cocktails like the Negroni, Manhattan, and Americano, black vermouth plays a key role. However, in Barcelona, we enjoy it on the rocks, garnished with an olive and a slice of orange.

    White Vermouth

    Color and Flavor
White vermouth, also known as dry or bianco vermouth, features a pale, straw-like color. It offers a lighter, drier profile compared to black vermouth, with crisp, clean flavors that hint at citrus, herbs, and often floral notes.

    Base Wine
This variety is made exclusively from white wine.

    Usage
White vermouth is essential in cocktails such as the Martini, Vodka Martini, and Vesper.

    The Michael Jackson Vermouth
For a unique twist, try the ‘Michael Jackson’ Vermouth, which mixes white and black vermouth. This blend offers a surprisingly pleasant taste, combining the best of both worlds. It’s not politically correct, and I love it!

Vermouth Culture in Barcelona

Vermouth, known locally as vermut, has a storied and vibrant culture in Barcelona. This fortified wine, flavored with various botanicals and herbs, has become a beloved part of the city’s social fabric.

Historical Background

Originally popular in the 19th century, vermouth was consumed for its “medicinal” properties. Over time, it evolved into a social drink, especially popular in Catalonia. Traditionally, it’s served on tap (vermut de grifo) in bars and bodegas, accompanied by a slice of orange and an olive.

Social Aspect

Vermouth is more than just a drink; it’s a ritual that brings people together. It goes VERY well with tapas like anchovie stuffed olives, anchovies, chips, or calamari. The practice of meeting for a glass of vermouth and a bite to eat is called “fer el vermut” or “hacer el vermut,” which literally means “to do the vermouth.” This tradition is deeply embedded in the social life of Barcelona and serves as a prelude to a larger meal or as a casual gathering with friends.

Correct Time to Drink Vermouth

The best time to enjoy vermouth in Barcelona is around midday or early afternoon, typically between noon and 2 pm. This tradition has roots in the custom of aperitivo, a pre-lunch or pre-dinner drink meant to whet the appetite. On weekends, especially Sundays, it’s common for locals to gather in vermuterias (vermouth bars) to share a leisurely vermouth session before their lunch.

Modern Revival

In recent years, vermouth has experienced a resurgence, with many new bars and restaurants dedicating themselves to crafting and serving high-quality vermouth. This revival has brought with it a range of artisanal and innovative vermouths, enhancing the traditional experience.

Notable Vermuterias in Barcelona

  1. Morro Fi: A popular spot known for its homemade vermouth and vibrant atmosphere.
  2. Quimet & Quimet: Famous for its extensive selection of vermouth and creative tapas.
  3. Bar Calders: A cozy place in Sant Antoni with a great vermouth menu.

Martini is a popular brand, that is commonly available in most bars. As you acquire a taste, it is fun to start tasting artesian vermouths that are crafted in large casks. Most vermouth bars have their own ‘house’ blend that they serve.
